Dear Texas,
a play inspired by interviews from the transgender community
When I left Vermont to drive across the country to San Francisco, all I brought with me was sheer determination and a degree in women & gender studies. Miraculously, I managed to land a job as a reporter at the LGBTQ publication, FourTwoNine Magazine. During my time there I became deeply Inspired by the stories I reported on within the transgender community.
So much so that I decided to go rogue — I left my position at the magazine to pursue my dream of becoming the next Eve Ensler (author of the Vagina Monologues).
I put an ad on the Internet and stapled flyers to coffee shop bulletins, stating that I was a writer interested in interviewing transgender people about their experience in the world. Specifically, about gender, sexuality, and how to navigate ground that was profoundly uneven for any persons cast to the margins.
My inbox got flooded with people who wanted to tell their stories — to confide in me. With grateful ears, I listened. I heard dozens of stories about gender identity and the fight it takes to live authentically to who you are. This project eventually turned into a full length play, Dear Texas, which was crowd funded and produced.
The Story
Dear Texas, made the news!
"Every intimate moment, every tear and smile feels real...the writing, directing, and acting are as beautiful as they are profoundly heartbreaking...None of these main themes are exclusive to the transgender community. They are universal."
"Dear Texas, allows a perspective to the Trans identified lives that cannot be ignored."
